Lying off the north-western coast of the European mainland, the UK includes the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the United Kingdom that shares a land border with another sovereign state‍—‌the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to its east, the English Channel to its south and the Celtic Sea to its south-south-west, giving it the 12th-longest coastline in the world. The Irish Sea lies between Great Britain and Ireland. With an area of 242,500 square kilometres, the UK is the 78th-largest sovereign state in the world. It is also the 21st-most populous country, with an estimated 65.5 million inhabitants in 2016.

The UK is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. The monarch is Queen Elizabeth II, who has reigned since 1952, making her the longest-serving current head of state. The UK’s capital and largest city is London, a global city and financial centre with an urban area population of 10.3 million. Other major urban areas in the UK include the conurbations centred on Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow and Liverpool. The UK consists of four countries England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. All but England have devolved administrations, each with varying powers, based in their capitals Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast, respectively. The nearby Isle of Man, Bailiwick of Guernsey and Bailiwick of Jersey are not part of the UK, being Crown dependencies with the British Government responsible for defence and international representation.

  7. Saving the variety

New York is really the melting pot of the world. Over 30 percent of its

residents have come from abroad. It is believed that the city has the greatest

linguistic diversity on the planet. There are over 800 different languages

spoken by its people. As some of these languages are nearly extinct, the City

University of New York has begun a project called the Endangered Language

Alliance. Its aim is to preserve rare languages like Bukhari, Vhlaski, and Ormuri.

3.Unknown side of the city

B. New Yorkers love to think they know everything about their city: where to find

the best fruit, how to avoid paying full price at museums, what route to take to

avoid traffic. But New York City can reveal new treasures even to its veterans.

Beyond the city where New-Yorkers work, eat, play and commute every day

lies a hidden New York: mysterious, forgotten, abandoned or just overlooked.

There are places about which you’re not likely to read in any guidebook.

5. The city of skyscrapers

c.The Chrysler Building was in a race with the Bank of Manhattan for getting the

title of the tallest skyscraper in the world. The Bank was likely to triumph, with

its height of 282 meters. But the spire of the Chrysler Building was constructed

in secret inside the tower. Just one week after the Bank of Manhattan was

finished, it was put in place, making it 318 meters tall and beating the Bank. It

wouldn’t keep this title for long: one year later the Empire State Building was erected.

8. Nickname for a building

D. The Flatiron Building was constructed between 1901 and 1903 at the

intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue. It was designed by Chicago’s

Daniel Burnham as a steel-frame skyscraper covered with white terra-cotta.

Built as the headquarters of the Fuller Construction company, the skyscraper

was meant to be named Fuller Building. But locals soon started calling it

“Flatiron” because of its unusual shape. The name stuck and soon became official.

6. For the holiday and more

E. How does Rockefeller Center manage to find the perfect fur-tree each

Christmas season? They do aerial searches by helicopter, of course, and bring it

to the city during the night when there isn’t much traffic on the streets. After

the tree is taken down for the year, it continues to be useful. For example, in

2005 Habitat for Humanity used the wood to make doorframes for houses for

the poor and in 2012 the paper was used to publish a book.

2. Always in a hurry

F. In New York life never stands still. People have to call cabs, ride subway cars,

do business of all kinds, eat pizzas and sandwiches for lunch. When you

multiply that by more than eight million people in less than 500 square miles,

you get the idea: everyone goes everywhere as fast as it is humanly possible.

Whatever you do, don’t stop in the middle of the sidewalk or you’ll make

everyone around you incredibly angry.

  1. Getting around the city

G. New York is extremely easy to navigate. Manhattan is divided into numbered

streets from north to south and avenues from east to west. It’s almost

impossible to get lost there. Buses are useful to travel around Manhattan, and

the subway is the best means of transport to the other parts of the city. At some

stage you’ll definitely use a yellow taxi. Try to get one on an avenue that’s

My Hero

It seems like everyone is quick to list people off as their hero, typically listing their parents, grandparents, a favorite musician, or even a teacher. While those people can be huge influences, I would not list them as my heroes. However, they are all people who have helped build the strength and personality of my own hero. So who is my hero? It is me!

This may seem rather unusual, which it probably is, but I do not know anyone stronger than myself. Others have been through their own experiences, but who is the only person who has gone through the exact same path as you and survived? You!

This last school year for me has honestly been probably the most difficult year in my life thus far. My family has changed in many way both with additions and subtractions, I have changed, my values and beliefs have changed, and my mentality on many things have changed. One of the hardest things however, was admitting that I needed help. I have always kept things to myself and have tried to take care of myself so admitting that I couldn't do something alone was really difficult for me. However, when I finally did my family and friends rallied behind me and showed me who was there for me, even those who I thought didn't care stepped up and helped me.

While they were a great help, this never would have happened if I did not stand up for myself. Needing help is not a sign of weakness it is a sign of being strong enough to know your limits. Do you think that Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson didn't need help to win? Do you think that Steven Tyler and Aerosmith made it completely on their own? The answer is no, but they knew they needed to ask in order to better themselves.

Now, why do you need to be your own hero? You need to stand up for yourself and do what is best for you, if you won't who else will? No one should have the power to control any part of your life other than you.

Macedonia is a landlocked Balkan nation of mountains, lakes and ancient towns with Ottoman and European architecture. The capital, Skopje, is known for its sprawling Old Bazaar quarter and historic buildings turned museums, including the National Gallery of Macedonia, housed in a 15th-century Turkish bath complex. The southern city Ohrid, on a lake of the same name, has a medieval townscape and hilltop castle.

Hovhannes Tumanyan was born on February 19, 1869 in the village of Dsegh, Tiflis Governorate, Russian Empire (now in Lori Province, Armenia).

His father, Aslan (1839–1898), was the village priest known by the name Ter-Tadevos. He was an offspring of an Armenian princely family of Tumanyan, branch of the famous royal house of Mamikonian that settled in Lori in 10th–11th centuries from their original feudal fief of Taron.

His mother, Sona (1842–1936), was an avid storyteller with a particular interest in fables. Young Tumanyan was the oldest of eight children; his siblings were Rostom (1871–1915), Osan (1874–1926), Iskuhi (1878–1943), Vahan (1881–1937), Astghik (1885–1953), Arshavir (1888–1921), Artashes (1892–1916).[4]

From 1877–1879, Tumanyan attended the parochial school of Dsegh. From 1879–1883 he went to a school in Jalaloghly.[5] Tumanyan moved to Tiflis in 1883, where he attended the Nersisyan School from 1883–1887.[2] Tumanyan's wrote his first poem at the age of 12, while studying in Jalaloghly school. He lived at the teacher's house for a while and fell in love with the teacher's daughter Vergine.[5] Since 1893, Tumanyan worked for Aghbyur, Murtch, Hasker and Horizon periodicals and also was engaged in public activism.[2]

In 1899, Tumanyan came up with an idea of organizing meetings of Armenian intellectuals of the time at his house on 44 Bebutov Street in Tiflis (present-day Amaghleba 18, in Sololaki). Soon it became an influential literary group, which often gathered in the garret of Tumanyan's house. Vernatun means garret in Armenian, which was the name the group was referred to. Prominent members of the collective were Avetik Isahakyan, Derenik Demirchyan, Levon Shant, Ghazaros Aghayan, Perch Proshyan, Nikol Aghbalian, Alexander Shirvanzade, Nar-Dos, Vrtanes Papazyan, Vahan Terian, Leo, Stepan Lisitsyan, Mariam Tumanyan, Gevorg Bashinjagyan and many other significant Armenian figures of early 20th century. With some pauses, it existed until 1908.[2]

In 1912 Tumanyan was elected the president of the Company of Caucasus Armenian Writers.[2]

In the fall of 1921, Tumanyan went to Constantinople to find support of Armenian refugees. After months spent there, he returned ill. After surgery in 1922, he started to get better. But in September, Tumanyan's disease started to progress again. He was transferred to a hospital in Moscow, where he died on March 23, 1923.[6]

Vahan Teryan poems

I LOVE YOUR DARK AND WICKED EYES

I love your dark and wicked eyes, as deep

as the mysterious evening is deep, and dark

as the spell that dusk casts. I love the vast

seascape of your eyes where sin

hesitates like twilight before flickering past

where luck and chance have been.

I love your eyes, their drunken golden haze,

eyes that magnetize the lost like wordless beams

and torture the soul with their pitiless

caress. I love their dark and mysterious depths.

MY MOTHER'S HANDS

My mother's hands were tapered slim

like candles that might burst in flame.

My mother's voice was like a balm

soothing each pain, calling each name.

Her holy sense of right and wrong.

Forever calm, her fire-filled eyes.

Her thousand tales, her endless songs.

 teryan

On 9th of February (New Style) the 11th child Vahan was born in  big family of the village priest Sukias Ter-Grigoryan in Gandza, Akhalkalak district of Javakhk. The child was the future poet Vahan Teryan.

In order to obtain a reference on variola Ter-Sukias took 7 years old Vahan to Akhalkalak in 1892. Here Teryan first saw the trees.

Primary education Teryan received in Gandza. His first teacher was a native of Telavi Nikoghayos Khechoyan, a man with high education, about whom Teryan has made the warmest memories.

In September of 1895, he entered school in Akhalkalak. Winter holidays Teryan spent at home-village, and refused to continue his studies, experiencing deep frustration of urban life and the atmosphere that prevailed there.

Still in 1890, as well as 1895 Sukias Ter-Grigoryan had gone to Lazarian Institute for the admission of his son Vahan Ter-Grigoryan. In March Teryan passed the examinations in the First Tiflis Gymnasium, the reference about which is available. It is also known that prior to admission to this seminary Teryan had lived for two years in Tiflis together with his brother Aram.

The document, received from the seminary, dated June 2, has been saved: “As your turn has come, I have got the honor to request respectfully regarding the arrival at the Seminary on the 12th of August of current year your son, Vahan Ter-Grigoryan ... to take the exams ...”

The Lazarian Institute archive document states: "Scholarship holder of the Armenian churches Vahan Ter-Grigoryan. Born on the 28th of January, 1885 has entered the third class on the 14th of August, 1899”.

Together with his friends (Tsolak Khanzadyan, Poghos Makintsyan, Onik Ohanjanyan, Melkon Karamyan) Vahan Teryan issues a handwritten newspaper “Hope” In Lazaryan Seminary. "Vahan Teryan generally used to issue editorials in this newspaper. He also headed the department of poetry, where put his poems were being placed ", - has written in his memoirs M. Karamyan. Teryan’s pseudonyms in the newspaper were Shvin, Volo, etc.

On the 7th of April 1903 he wrote the first letter to his sister Nasho from Moscow (Nakhshun Ter-Grigoryan-Simonyan): “Everything is ok, I am healthy, and I wish You all health ...”

In May, 6th grade pupil of Lazarian Institute hardly seeks for means to visit his sick mother. Having borrowed money, he returned to Moscow. In October, Teryan’s mother, Yughaber Ter-Grigoryan, died. The death of the mother was one of the most terrible moments for Vahan Teryan in his life. Later he wrote series of poems in her memory, as well as the "Elegy" and "To the Stranger Girl”.

Christmas or Christmas Day (Old English: Crīstesmæsse, meaning "Christ's Mass") is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ,[7][8] observed most commonly on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world.[2][11][12] A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it is prepared for by the season of Advent or the Nativity Fast and initiates the season of Christmastide, which historically in the West lasts twelve days and culminates on Twelfth Night;[13] in some traditions, Christmastide includes an Octave.[14] The traditional Christmas narrative, the Nativity of Jesus, delineated in the New Testament says that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in accordance with messianic prophecies;[15] when Joseph and Mary arrived in the city, the inn had no room and so they were offered a stable where the Christ Child was soon born, with angels proclaiming this news to shepherds who then disseminated the message furthermore.[16] Christmas Day is a public holiday in many of the world's nations,[17][18][19] is celebrated religiously by the vast majority of Christians,[20] as well as culturally by a number of non-Christian people,[1][21][22] and is an integral part of the holiday season, while some Christian groups reject the celebration. In several countries, celebrating Christmas Eve on December 24 has the main focus rather than December 25, with gift-giving and sharing a traditional meal with the family.

Although the month and date of Jesus' birth are unknown, by the early-to-mid fourth century the Western Christian Church had placed Christmas on December 25,[23] a date that was later adopted in the East.[24][25] Today, most Christians celebrate on December 25 in the Gregorian calendar, which has been adopted almost universally in the civil calendars used in countries throughout the world. However, some Eastern Christian Churches celebrate Christmas on December 25 of the older Julian calendar, which currently corresponds to January 7 in the Gregorian calendar, the day after the Western Christian Church celebrates the Epiphany. This is not a disagreement over the date of Christmas as such, but rather a preference of which calendar should be used to determine the day that is December 25. In the Council of Tours of 567, the Church, with its desire to be universal, "declared the twelve days between Christmas and Epiphany to be one unified festal cycle", thus giving significance to both the Western and Eastern dates of Christmas.[26][27][28][29][30] Moreover, for Christians, the belief that God came into the world in the form of man to atone for the sins of humanity, rather than the exact birth date, is considered to be the primary purpose in celebrating Christmas

Baby’s first Christmas poem

By Mary Lewis

It’s Baby’s first Christmas, what a beautiful sight!

As he gurgles out loud in spontaneous delight.

As he gazes at the tree, with it’s baubles and trim

I know only he can hear the angels sweet hymns.

Holy! Holy! Holy!As He edges ever nearer to the base of the tree,

Picks up tiny toys and shakes them with glee

Mommy and Daddy have to laugh outright.

It’s baby’s first Christmas – what a wonderful night!

Holy! Holy! Holy!

Christmas Bells

By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I heard the bells on Christmas Day

Their old, familiar carols play,

And wild and sweet

The words repeat

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,

The belfries of all Christendom

Had rolled along

The unbroken song

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!Till, ringing, singing on its way

The world revolved from night to day,

A voice, a chime,

A chant sublime

Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Then from each black, accursed mouth

The cannon thundered in the South,

And with the sound

The Carols drowned

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!And in despair I bowed my head;

‘There is no peace on earth,’ I said;

‘For hate is strong,

And mocks the song

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!’

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

‘God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!

The Wrong shall fail,

The Right prevail,

With peace on earth, good-will to men!

Soghomon Soghomonian, ordained and commonly known as Komitas,(Armenian: Կոմիտաս; 26 September 1869 – 22 October 1935) was anArmenian priest, musicologist, composer, arranger, singer, and choirmaster, who is considered the founder of Armenian national school of music. He is recognized as one of the pioneers of ethnomusicology.

Orphaned at a young age, Komitas was taken to Etchmiadzin, Armenia’s religious center, where he received education at the Gevorgian Seminary. Following his ordination as vardapet (celibate priest) in 1895, he studied music at the Frederick William University in Berlin. He thereafter “used his Western training to build a national tradition”. He collected and transcribed over 3,000 pieces of Armenian folk music, more than half of which were subsequently lost and only around 1,200 are now extant. Besides Armenian folk songs, he also showed interest in other cultures and in 1904 published the first-ever collection of Kurdish folk songs. His choir presented Armenian music in many European cities, earning the praise of Claude Debussy, among others. Komitas settled in Constantinople in 1910 to escape mistreatment by ultra-conservative clergymen at Etchmiadzin and to introduce Armenian folk music to wider audiences. He was widely embraced by Armenian communities, while Arshag Chobanian called him the “savior of Armenian music”.

During the Armenian Genocide—along with hundreds of other Armenian intellectuals—Komitas was arrested and deported to a prison camp in April 1915 by the Ottoman government. He was soon released under unclear circumstances and experienced a mental breakdown and developed a severe case of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The widespread hostile environment in Constantinople and reports of mass-scale Armenian death marches and massacres that reached him further worsened his fragile mental state. He was first placed in a Turkish military-operated hospital until 1919 and then transferred to psychiatric hospitals in Paris, where he spent the last years of his life in agony. Komitas is widely seen as a martyr of the genocide and has been depicted as one of the main symbols of the Armenian Genocide in art.

Motherland

Some people say that life is better in Motherland. Others are sure that it is better to live abroad because there are more various opportunities. Who is right? Let’s look at the problem from different points of view.

Personally I choose to live in my Motherland. Why? Firstly, Motherland is the place where you were born. Motherland is your second home. Motherland is the place where you spend the best years of your life. Secondly, it is very hard to leave your Motherland because you are still going to miss it – your native city, the street and trees that you used to see out of your window every day… It is your «world». And you, yourself, are part of this world. Thirdly, you have a lot of close people, your parents, relatives and friends in Motherland. They all are always ready to help you and will never leave you in trouble. They will always love you, and in a foreign country you will have to do without them, and you will feel lonely.

But some people believe that Motherland is not important for them. Such people believe that it is much better in other countries than in their Motherland. They think that in other countries they can achieve more. For them Motherland is only the place where they were born and nothing more.

I do not agree with these people because Motherland is a very important part of our lives, and in the Motherland you can achieve anything you want. We should be proud of our Motherland, respect and love it, do our best to help it.

In conclusion, I can say that life is the best in Motherland. Still it is my opinion and my choice. You may make your personal decision, but be sure not to make a mistake.
